How to convert HEIC photos to JPG
iPhones save photos in HEIC format — half the size of JPG at the same quality, and completely baffling to half the software in the world. If Windows, an upload form, or an old app refuses your photos, converting them to JPG fixes it for good.

Why your photos are HEIC in the first place
Apple switched the default camera format to HEIC because it stores the same photo in roughly half the space. Great for your storage; not great when Windows wants a paid codec to open it and web forms reject it outright.
Stop the problem at the source
If you'd rather never see HEIC again: on your iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos shoot as JPG from then on. Your existing HEIC photos still need converting.
A note on quality
Converting to JPG re-encodes the image at high quality — for photos the difference is invisible. If you're archiving originals, keep the HEIC files too; they're your smallest full-quality copies.
